Even un-winnable scenarios can become victories with smart positioning and quick reaction time. Volleys can last seconds or closer to minutes as the tension ramps up.

Oh, and the best part? You don’t have to chase after the ball either!īut seriously, tennis in Wii Sports is a blast to play.

It’s fast paced, has great controls (just swing, baby!!), and will induce moments of absolute pure rage or unbridled joy. This game has everything you want in a friendly competitive setting. Tennis in Wii Sports is THE ultimate competitive game to play with your friends, while also smacking them in the face with the remote. And the reason it’s not higher on the list? It’s not the best multiplayer experience Wii Sports has to offer, and after all, isn’t that what playing this game is all about? It’s also a very easy game to pick up, but super hard to master. Golf in Wii Sports is a fantastic solo game to sink hours into perfecting your shot and knocking points off your best score. And when you absolutely nail a putt by accurately judging the curve of the green? There’s nothing better. There’s something really satisfying about lining up your shot with the wind and hitting it exactly right, or finding that shortcut that shaves a stroke off your score. Just you, your clubs, and the fairway ahead of you.

I don’t have the patience for golf in real life, but I’ve got all the time in the world for Wii Sports golf. And the elongated whoosh sound as the ball flies off the bat unlocks something primal in me every time I hear it.

That being said, it’s very fun to put your television in the line of fire as you swing around the Wii remote at full speed like a baseball bat. I know the hardware limitations of the Wii made it impossible to control the other characters in their acts of picking up balls and throwing them to their respective bases, which is why you get the weird disjointed gameplay where you’re either only hitting or only pitching when its your turn to do so. Bowling can have all 10 rounds but you deprive me of a full, motion controlled and simulated baseball experience? For shame, Nintendo. While the core mechanics of this baseball game are sound, it bothered me so much that you played just three innings. Still, the game isn’t terrible and honestly the resounding thumps of the punching sounds are super satisfying when you’re in the zone and feeling it. Not only that, but making your character transparent in an attempt to make it almost-but-not-quite first person didn’t really work for me either, as a more normal, fixed camera behind a shoulder might have worked better. It was always the game on the disk that I played the least with friends and family. Not only that, the boxing game just always felt… the least fun of the core five Wii Sports games. Whenever I played, I always swayed too often to the right or left in a movement that felt out of my control, making my character’s giant head oscillate wildly and making it very difficult to land my punches or time my blocks. Here are the sports of Wii Sports ranked from worst to first.įor the most part, I feel as if Wii Sports got the motion controls pretty spot on… except for boxing.

So, in honor of the Wii and Wii Sports - which Nintendo should bring back in some form, whether that be porting the original to the Switch or making a new one - how about we do a fun ranking of the sports in the game? For brevity’s sake, I’m sticking with the original Wii Sports here, but maybe in the future I’ll revisit this down the line for the popular sequel Wii Sports Resort. And what a game it was! Not only did it show off the motion sensor hardware that became a staple of the Wii’s lifetime, it also made for an incredibly fun time whether you were playing by yourself or were competing with friends and family.

It was a simpler time back in the mid-2000s, though much like the Switch when it first launched, the Wii was just as hard to get for the modern household.īut if you owned a Wii, you also owned a copy of Wii Sports, Nintendo’s motion controlled sports simulator that was bundled with every console. Once upon a time, before the Nintendo Switch, the Wii was the company’s biggest and hottest console on the market.
